Lake Havasu City: the ideal desert oasis en route to Las Vegas or Los Angeles

If you’re planning a road trip to Las Vegas or Los Angeles, consider making an intermediate stop at the vibrant city of Lake Havasu, Arizona. Nestled on the eastern shore of the shimmering Lake Havasu, this charming city offers a delightful blend of sunny weather, picturesque landscapes, and a wealth of activities that make it a must-visit destination.

    The city’s climate and location

Lake Havasu City is blessed with a desert climate, boasting more than 300 days of sunshine annually. Winters are mild, with temperatures rarely dipping below 50°F, making it an ideal winter getaway. Summers can be hot, with temperatures often soaring above 100°F, perfect for those who enjoy basking in the sun and engaging in water activities.

Located in Mohave County, Arizona, Lake Havasu City is conveniently positioned between two of the most popular destinations in the southwestern United States—Las Vegas and Los Angeles. It’s approximately a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Las Vegas and around a four-hour drive from Los Angeles, making it an ideal pitstop to break up the journey and explore a unique locale.

A day in Lake Havasu city: what to do

Start your day with a visit to the Arizona’s second most visited tourist attraction after the Grand Canyon: the London Bridge that once spanned the River Thames, in England. Yes, the very same old London Bridge, whose history is extensively detailed in this article– if you wish to delve deeper into the subject- was dismantled and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City in 1971. This remarkable feat of engineering and history is a sight to behold. Take a leisurely stroll across the bridge, explore the surrounding English Village, and snap some photos to capture the moment.

Next, head over to Bridgewater Channel, a man-made waterway that connects Lake Havasu to Thompson Bay. The channel is a hub of activity, lined with sandy beaches, picnic areas, and vibrant shops. Rent a paddleboard, kayak, or jet ski for an exciting adventure on the water. For a more relaxed experience, consider booking a boat tour that offers a scenic cruise through the channel and the lake’s beautiful coves and beaches.

After a morning of exploration, enjoy lunch at one of the many waterfront restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for casual dining or a gourmet meal, you’ll find plenty of options offering delicious food and stunning lake views. Try local favorites like fish tacos or a refreshing salad made with fresh, local ingredients.

In the afternoon, you have options depending on your interests. For water enthusiasts, consider renting a pontoon boat or joining a guided fishing tour. Lake Havasu is renowned for its excellent fishing opportunities, including species like largemouth bass, striped bass, and catfish.

If you prefer to stay on land, explore one of the nearby hiking trails. The SARA Park Trailhead offers a variety of trails suitable for all levels, with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding desert landscape. Don’t miss the Crack in the Mountain Trail, which takes you through a scenic slot canyon.

As the day winds down, head to one of the many vantage points around the lake to watch the sunset. The Arizona sky lights up with brilliant hues of orange, pink, and purple, creating a breathtaking backdrop for your evening. After sunset, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. From cozy bistros to lively bars and grills, there’s something to satisfy every palate.
